Celje Slovenian Champion, Gorenje Back in the CL

The Slovenian Championship finished with two interesting and decisive matches last week. Celje reached the top once again, while Gorenje finished second, Koper third.

The Celje supporters had reason to celebrate well before the endThe Slovenian handball fans saw a great play-off where Celje Pivovarna Lasko secured their title four rounds before the end of the season. This is the 15th title for Celje in the history of the Slovenian championship. The only time they lost was in 2002 when Prule defeated them.

While the top spot was quickly reserved for Celje, the battle for the second place was open until the end. The last two matches decided. As Gorenje Velenje won last round against Gold Club and Cimos Koper lost against Celje, Gorenje reached second place and Koper finished third.

This was also the battle for a Champions League place next season. It means that Gorenje will return to the European top competition after missing one year. Trimo Trebnje (finished 5th and 3rd in Slovenian Cup) will play in the Cupwinners’ Cup. Two clubs from the coastal region, Cimos Koper and Gold Club, will take part in the EHF Cup.
