Carlos Ruesga will play for Portland until 2011
One of the most talented young Spanish players, the 22-year old Carlos Ruesga, has renewed his contract with Portland San Antonio until 2011. Originally, the contract of Ruesga would have expired in 2010, but Portland wanted to tie the player to the club for even longer.
“I am really happy because Portland is a big club. I can fight for titles every season and this is very important for a player. In addition, all the people in Pamplona have given me a great support all the time and I felt good the last two seasons.”
Carlos Ruesga (born in Gijón in 1986) arrived in Portland in August 2005 without Asobal League experience. However, his performance in the last two seasons made Ruesga an important player for the team. “I know that I was a surprise player the first season. I hope to improve day by day on court as I play with partners who are real international stars.”
Balic and Ruesga enjoy handball
Ivano Balic, World Player of Year in 2006, and Ruesga have the greatest influence on the attacks of San Antonio. The Croatian player gave great support to the young Spanish all the time and they have a very special relationship.
“Ivano is the best player in the World, so I must work hard to reach a similar level. He helps me to improve. We have a very similar concept of handball. We like to play handball and enjoy the sport. We can play important matches and enjoy them at the same time,” Rusega says.
Ruesga was called up for the Spanish national team by Juan Carlos Pastor for the matches against Germany and Denmark. The only wish of Ruesga at the moment is to finally win a title. “I am really happy for my performanc in Portland, but we play for the victories. We must work and fight more for winning an important title for the Portland fans”. TEXT: Fernando Urra Goñi |
