German CL Teams worry about injuries

Flensburg, Hamburg and Gummersbach are waiting for the return of the injured to start CL with complete rosters.

German CL Teams worry about injuries

Three key players of Germany’s runner-up, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, are injured at the moment. However, new club manager, Fynn Holpert, hopes that they will be able to play at the start of the Champions League season at end of September.

Lackovic (left) and von Behren (middle) show that they need some time to recoverDanish right wing, Sören Stryger, Croatian backcourt player, Blazenko Lackovic, and German playmaker, Frank von Behren, are out of action since the start of the season.

Nevertheless, SG Flensburg-Handewitt won all the three matches of Toyota-Bundesliga so far including the Sunday’s match in the Kölnarena against VfL Gummersbach.

“We made a good start and we hope that our injured players will be back soon,” said Fynn Holpert after the 30:28 win against Gummersbach in the first Bundesliga match of this season between two German CL participants. It was the first victory ever for Flensburg in the Kölnarena.

Lackovic and Stryger have knee injuries, while von Behren suffers from a broken finger.

“We need them not only in the Champions League,” said Holpert.

Zrnic, Gille and the others

A key player is missing also in Gummersbach: winger Vedran Zrnic is still injured and VfL just signed former German national player, Adrian Wagner. One thing that gave grounds for optimism was the return of goalkeeper Goran Stojanovic, who also had a broken finger.

Hamburg worry about a long term injury of their playmaker, Guillaume Gille. The French player was hit in the face at the match against Großwallstadt. The doctors fixed the injury with stitches near his eyebrow, but now it seems that the injury is not so severe, but the French may not be ready for the next league match.
