First defeat for Portland
Portland suffered their first domestic defeat in Valladolid. The hosts are well known to cause difficulties on home court for the best teams. With this defeat Portland lose their lead on the league table and remain seventh with two points from two matches.
This game brought serious difficulties for coach Javier Cabanas since his arrival to San Antonio. The first half was really equal. The Portland defence was really strong since the first minutes, but Vugrinec and Jorgensen were punished soon by suspensions. This advantage gave to local club the initiative in scoring. However, the good defensive work paid back and San Antonio took control of the game. Cabanas’ team won the first half 15-17.
Kjelling was the best in the Portland attacks after the break. They kept on defending hard and there was a five-goal difference for San Antonio at 15-20 in the minute 35th minute. Portland lose comfortable lead
The match looked perfect for the guests, but Valladolid did not give up. A 8-1 for the hosts was enough to come back into the game and take the lead. Cabanas tried to wake his team up, but it was late. Valladolid won 31-30 and Portland lost a very good chance to win one of the most difficult away games for Pamplona.
Ciudad Real, Barcelona and Ademar – the other Spanish CL teams – won their weekend games without any problem and they are on the top of the table, but all of them focus on the Champions League from now on that will begin this week. TEXT: Fernando Urra Goñi |
