Gislasson stays until 2010

Coach Alfred Gislasson (48), signs new contract (the current expires at the end of this season) with VfL Gummersbach. The new agreement will be valid until 2010. The Icelandic coach who won Champions League with his former club, SC Magdeburg, arrived in 2006 to the traditional German club. And VfL is glad that Gislasson stays near Cologne:

Gislasson will stay on the Vfl bench for two more years“He is doing a very good job and his decision means continuity. This is a positive signal for planning the future,” said sports director Fracois Xavier Houlet.

The two parties –coach and manager – are planning the future of the club. Key player, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson, will leave Gummersbach in 2009 the latest and it was alleged that Gislassons also had an offer from his former club, Magdeburg. However, Gislasson always said that he doesn’t want to return to Magdeburg.

Gummersbach already reached their main international objective by reaching the Main Round of the Champions League. Though they did not start very well in the Bundesliga, the new players have shown improvement by now.

“Even as we lost eleven points already, our aim is to qualify for the Champions League again,” said Gislasson:

“In May 2008 you will see if we are going in the right direction or not.”

After the confirmation of Gislasson, the club hopes to sign new players and sign new contracts with the current players of the team.
