Viborg sign Karen SmidtProminent Women’s CL squad, Viborg HK, have been focusing on building and even stronger team than they had last season. The last signing was line player Karen Smidt. The 29-year old Smidt, who will arrive from a first division club Skive FH, played for Viborg already in 2004-05. She will be the third pivot of the squad together with German international Anja Althaus and Danish international Lene Lund Nielsen. Though Lene Lund suffers from a knee injury, she can play at the moment. In order to secure a solution for the case Lund should stop for some time, the club signed Karen Smidt. “In a season when our goal is to get as far as possible in all tournaments, it is important to have a large squad with many qualified players. Karen Smidt fits in perfectly,” Viborg´s head coach Jakob Vestergaard said. Before the season Viborg already signed a 24-year old Hungarian international right winger, Mónika Kovacsicz. She joined from the Hungarian Ferencváros. Kovacsicz did not have much time to train together with the new mates as she was playing for Hungary at the Olympic Games in Beijing. In addition, 36-year old former Chinese international Chao Zhai – World Player of the Year in 2002 – returned to the team after a year of pause. In the CL Viborg will face Krim Ljubljana, 1. FC Nürnberg and one more team from the qualification tournaments. Their Danish campaigned kicked off perfectly: four spectacular wins in the first four matches. TEXT: Peter Bruun |
