The draw for the play-off matches to the 2009 Women’s World Championship in China (IHF event) was carried out today on the occasion of the EHF EURO 2008 final weekend in Skopje/MKD.

The draw for the play-off matches to the 2009 Women’s World Championship in China (IHF event) was carried out today on the occasion of the EHF EURO 2008 final weekend in Skopje/MKD.

The matches of the first phase of the Qualification Europe were played in three groups across Europe in November 2008 and the teams proceeding from these groups to the play-offs are: NED from group 1, MNE from group 2 and SVK from group 3.
These three teams are joined by those 13 teams from the EURO 2008 in MKD that did not qualify directly to the 2009 World Championship.

Please find below the results of the draw, including more information regarding the European qualification process:

Total Entries in Qualification Europe:  33 teams
Places for Europe in Final Tournament: 11 (including RUS as World Champion)
Qualified for Final Tournament: 3 teams from Europe: RUS as defending champion, ESP and NOR as the two best ranked teams from the EHF EURO 2008 in MKD (as well as CHN as the organiser)

Qualified for Play-Offs:
1. 13 teams from EURO 2008: AUT, BLR, CRO, DEN, FRA, GER, HUN, MKD, POR, ROU, SRB, SWE, UKR
2. 3 teams from qualification groups: NED, MNE, SVK

The winners of the play-off matches are qualified for the 2009 World Championship in China.
