Qualification Europe Phase 1
The six playing rounds of Phase 1 will take place until the middle of January 2012. 21 European nations will participate in these rounds which will be played in seven groups with three teams:
Group 1: Austria, Israel, Great Britain Group 2: Portugal, Ukraine, Turkey Group 3: Montenegro, Latvia, Belgium Group 4: Estonia, Netherlands, Finland Group 5: Lithuania, Switzerland, Italy Group 6: Greece, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Cyprus Group 7: Belarus, Romania, Luxembourg
The first placed in each group will qualify for the play-off matches in June 2012.
Qualification Europe Phase 2 11 teams from the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia that do not earn direct tickets to the 2013 World Championships will meet the seven group winners of the Qualification Europe Phase 1 in the play-off matches on 9/10 June and 16/17 June 2012. The draw for the play-offs is planned to take place on the final day of the Men’s EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia on 29 January 2012.
Direct qualification for the 2013 Men’s World Championship in Spain will be awarded to the top three teams out of the 16 competing at the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia.
Spain (host of the 2013 World Championship) and France (defending world champions) have already qualified for the 2013 World Championship, so their placing will not count should they finish in the top three in Serbia. Therefore, potentially the top five teams at the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia could qualify directly for the 2013 World Championships.
11 out of 14 teams from the EHF EURO 2012 (Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, FYR Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden) will proceed to the nine play-off pairings in June 2012.
