Underdog defeats Goliath

Hypo surprisingly overcome Győr in a nail-biter, and everything is blown wide-open in the group.

Underdog defeats Goliath

Amazing thriller in Südstadt with a happy ending for the Austrians as coach András Németh´s team beats favourite Győr in a high-class duel.

GROUP C

Hypo Niederösterreich (AUT) vs. Győri Audi ETO (HUN) 29:27 (15:13)

Mastermind Németh cooked-up a fantastic winning recipe as his team presented itself in top shape. Despite two red cards on Hypo´s side, the substitutes from the bench were equal replacements, and the Austrians overcame a Hungarian side that, today, lacked strength in attack and didn´t perform well in defence either.

Great tactics from the home side with their man-marking of playmakers Andrea Lekić and Anita Görbicz, and no concept from the other side, meant victory for the hosts.

Goalkeeper Bárbara Arenhart produced real heroics between the sticks and her team-mates also gave 110%. Thanks to these outstanding efforts and high motivation, the Austrians celebrated a well-deserved victory. The defeat is a deep disappointment for coach Csaba Konkoly, as his team could already have been in the Main Round if they’d taken just one point from this game.

With Hypo´s home win, everything is now wide-open in the group. Both teams can still make it to the Main Round, so an exciting weekend is coming up with the return match of the two clubs in Hungary on Sunday.
