Soós: "The EHF EURO would be a dream come true"
Lately, Hungary have lacked left-handed right-back players in the national team, but with her consistent quality performances at her current club, Hypo Niederösterreich, Viktória Soós is making her way to the red-white-green team and wishes to cement her place there.
Because of her height, the gifted Soós is not the distance sharpshooter of her country, but a player with a good eye for assists and she is also strong on breakthroughs and one-on-one situations.
In this exclusive interview with ehf-euro.com she talks about her first call-up to the national team, the excitement she felt when she wore Hungary's jersey for the first time and the communication between team and their trainer Karl Erik Bøhn. The 26-year-old also pointed out the importance of the games against Germany in the EHF EURO 2012 qualification games.
ehf-euro.com: Do you still remember your first nomination and your national team debut? What memories do you have?
Viktória Soós: It was last spring in a weekend match-up against the Netherlands and Brazil. Obviously I was very happy, but also a bit surprised, as I hadn’t expected it.
When I first met the coaching staff at the gathering, I was very, very nervous. Therefore in the games I was not doing that well as a debutant, but with the next calls, my nervousness had gone, fortunately.
ehf-euro.com: In a change to the coaching staff, Norwegian Karl Erik Bøhn became the head coach. What is the work with him and assistant coach Beáta Siti like, especially the communication with Bøhn in a foreign language?
Viktória Soós: The co-operation between the coach and the players is excellent in my opinion. From the outside it might look like there would be some misunderstandings because of the language, but with Beáta Siti there, it all works very well. All vital information is transmitted well to the players.
Although we haven´t worked together for very long, I can say that at training, at video analysis and in discussions, everything is clearly communicated to us, and both he, and Beáta Siti, are a very good coaching duo.
ehf-euro.com: Next up are two matches against Germany, Hungary's main contender in the group. What are your expectations against them?
Viktória Soós: I look forward to those games very much, as since November we haven't been together with the national team. Also, to play against Germany will fire up our side, as we aim to take revenge for the loss at the World Championship qualification last summer.
I can't wait to start working with the squad and obviously hope that I´ll receive some role within the team.
ehf-euro.com: In Austria, at your current club Hypo Niederosterreich you're trained, yet again, by coach András Németh. What does it mean for you to be coached by such a high-quality coach?
Viktória Soós: I´m very glad that he's my coach, as he’s been one of key factors in making me the player I am today. He was the coach who called me when I returned home to Hungary after my Spanish adventure, and this gave me lots of confidence.
He´s a very professional trainer and I really enjoy working with him.
ehf-euro.com: What would an EHF Women's European Championship participation mean to you?
Viktória Soós: This would be fantastic and I have to thank coach Németh for improving me as a player.
Obviously I always work hard at his training sessions, and always give my utmost. But we are not through yet and many things can happen before December 2012. Even so, this would be a dream come true and I´ll certainly give my best during the next months.
