Kiel and Madrid compete at IHF Super Globe

World club championship throws off Monday 27 August in Doha, Qatar

Kiel and Madrid compete at IHF Super Globe

The 2012 VELUX EHF Champions League finalists THW Kiel and Atletico Madrid will represent Europe at the IHF Super Globe, to be played in Doha, Qatar, from 27 August to 1 September.

The German side qualified directly as defending champions, the Spaniards made their way to Qatar by reaching the VELUX EHF Champions League final.

In Cologne at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 Kiel had the happy-end, winning 26:21, and in August 2011 Kiel were the winners in the IHF Super Globe final in Doha by beating Atletico Madrid (formerly Ciudad Real) 28:25.

For the third straight time after 2010 and 2011 Doha is the host of the IHF Super Globe – and like in the previous years eight teams from five continents will compete for the trophy in the Al-Gharaffa Arena.

THW Kiel will face Mudhar (Saudi-Arabia, Asian representative), Al-Sadd (Qatar, host) and the University of Sydney (Australia/Oceania representative) in the preliminary round. Atletico Madrid (Super Globe winner in 2007 and 2010) will compete with Al-Zamalek (Egypt/Africa), Metodista Sao Bernardo (Brazil/Pan America) and Al Jeish (Qatar, wildcard participant).

Kiel and Madrid are favourites again, though both Qatari clubs have strengthened their squads by “short-term transfers” from Europe. Due to the Super Globe regulations Madrid’s newcomer Ivano Balic is not eligible to play for his club, as the transfer was confirmed after the transfer deadline.

His coach Talant Dushebajew can continue his series of success at Doha, as he had won the trophy three times already (once as player with Santander), twice with Ciudad Real (as coach and player).

In total a prize money of 750.000 US Dollars is awarded to the three top teams, including 400.000 Dollars for the winner.
