Viborg best of Danish CL teams

Randers suffered the fifth defeat in a row in the combined total of domestic and European competitions

Viborg best of Danish CL teams

While Randers HK have done slightly better than Viborg HK in the Women´s EHF Champions League, it was the other way round, as the two teams met in Wednesday night´s top match in front of 2,400 spectators in Viborg Stadionhal.

Danish champions Randers still have a theoretical chance to advance, Viborg, who are out of the race for a berth in the Main Round of the Europe´s premier club competition before their last two matches, won 31:27 after 14:14 at half time.

While Viborg were missing injured Marit Malm Frafjord and Mouna Chebbah as well as long-term injured Amanda Kurtovic, Randers came with their strongest outfit, and the visitors also managed to take an 8-5 lead, but Viborg equalised by half time.

In the second half Viborg seemed to have more physical resources than Randers and after the guests had the lead in the first minutes after the break, the EHF Champions League winners from 2006, 2009 and 2010 slowly created a deciding lead in the match which was also a revenge match from last season´s final in the Danish championship.

Even ten goals from Danish international Camilla Dalby could not save Randers from suffering their fifth defeat in a row, in the Danish league and the European top flight as a total.

“We had our chances, but we made too many technical mistakes, and in the second half we seemed to be a bit worn out. There is no doubt, however, that we cannot afford to play like this on Sunday,” Randers coach Jan Leslie told the TV station TV2 Sport – referring to the fact that his team is playing a crucial EHF Champions League game away against Buxtehude Sunday.

Swedish international Johanna Ahlm scored eight goals for Viborg who now share the first place in the league table with FC Midtjylland. Both have 17 points after nine matches. Randers are in fourth position, four points behind.
