Magdeburg takes to Skopje only narrow lead

One of the biggest favourite of the new Men´s EHF Cup SC Magdeburg entered the inaugural season on a winning note after beating Vardar Skopje 30:27. However, the three goal cushion could prove to be too thin ice to walk on to the Group Phase for German bundesligists.

The second leg will be played on Sunday, 2 December in Skopje´s hall SRC Kale (18:00 hrs local time).

SC Magdeburg (GER) vs. HC Vardar PRO Skopje (MKD) 30:27 (16:13)

After 15 years the three times winners (1999, 2001 and 2007) of the predecessor of the newly formed competition returned to the old Hermann-Gieseler Arena for an European Cup´s match. Magdeburg were struggling at the beginning of the match and were trailing 1:6, but after the time-out of the home-team coach Frank Carstens managed to regroup and with a 11:2 run turn the score to 12:8. The visitors came back in the second half, but their 20:19 lead was the last in the match as the Magdeburg´s goalkeeper Kristian Asmussen stole the show and led his team to a narrow victory.

The best scorers for SCM were Andreas Rojewski, Moritz Schäpsmeier and Stian Tönnesen with five goals each, Vlatko Jovchevski and Dobrivoje Marković led the Macedonian team with six goals each.
