Oskarsson new Viborg coach

Viborg HK did not have to look far to find the new head coach for their women´s team. Oskar Bjarni Oskarsson from Iceland, who has been in charge of the men´s league team in the club since this summer, is taking over from Martin Albertsen who was sacked on November 27.due to the team´s disappointing performance in the EHF Champions League.

This manoeuvre has been made possible by a decision in Viborg to give their men´s team lower priority in the future in order to give the women´s team even higher priority than before.

Therefore, Oskarsson is taking over the women with immediate effect.

“Of course the circumstances are a little peculiar, and it was definitely not a development I was expecting when I arrived in Viborg in August.

I am sorry to leave the lads, with whom I have had a very fine relationship. However, I understand the decision of the club to give the women´s team priority, and I am very honoured to be trusted with this big task,” 39 year old Oskarsson said, as he was officially introduced as new head coach.

“The women´s team of Viborg has a unique position at the world map of handball, and I am really looking forward contributing to develop the team and Danish as well as international respect.

It will be extremely interesting, and I am going to work very hard for this project to be successful”, Oskar Oskarsson added.

“It is very important to us to establish an aggressive defence at an international level. We need to be precise in our defence and to match the physical hardness which the best teams come with.

“In these areas Oskar has some really good thoughts regarding aggressive defence and the tactical variation related to taking initiative in the defence,” Viborg HK´s sports director Susanne Munk Wilbek said about the choice of Oskar Oskarsson.

His first match in the hot seat with the Viborg women will be on 30 December, when Viborg meet Aalborg DH in the Danish league.
