Melbeck quits handball career

After 16 years of professional handball German right back Stefanie Melbeck announced the end of her career on Wednesday.

The reason is a good news for her, as the 35 year old player of Women´s EHF Champions League participant Buxtehuder SV is pregnant.

Melbeck just missed the EHF EURO due to a muscle injury in her leg.

Now she announced that she quits playing handball in general. In three terms – 1996-1999, 2001-2007 and since 2010, Melbeck played for Buxtehuder SV, becoming the only player in club history to score more than 1000 goals (1012 in 256 matches).

In between she wore the jerseys of Danish sides Randers (1999-2001) and Kolding (2007-2010). Since 1998 Melbeck was German international, and up to now scored 483 goals in 223 matches for the national team.
