Lekić and Radičević complement Vardar's dream team
Two of the EHF EURO 2012 All Star team, will be joining ŽRK Vardar SCBT Skopje next season.
Serbian Andrea Lekić, the best centre back at the latest EHF EURO in her home country, and Montenegrin Jovanka Radičević, the best right wing, are currently members of Györi Audi ETO KC, last season’s Women’s EHF Champions League finalists.
The pair have signed with the Macedonian club for season 2013/14, with the possibility of being extended for a further season.
These two signings have joined the influx of players after the team from Skopje strengthened their squad in December and January with Macedonian national team players Biljana Crvenkovska (centre back) and Julia Nikolić (back court), Spanish pivot Begona Molinos Fernandez, and Brazilian left winger Dayna de Rocha.
Three years after the Kometal GP Skopje ceased to exist, there is another team with big ambition in the city of Skopje.
Kometal GP Skopje was a Women’s EHF Champions League winner in 2002 and played in the final in 2000 and 2005.
However, if ŽRK Vardar SCBT wants to play at the highest level, they must first beat their local rivals ŽRK Metalurg Skopje, who were national champions in the last three seasons.
“I'm glad to be part of this new project in Vardar. This is a big challenge for me. I hope that in the coming year will show results and will raise the level of the Macedonian female handball as it was ten years ago.
“I know that FYR Macedonia wants handball and a wonderful audience. It is a great incentive and really look forward to be part of this team,” said Andrea Lekić.
She has won six national championship titles in three countries, in Serbia team ŽRK Knjaz Miloš (2007), in Slovenia with Krim (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) and in Hungary with Györi Audi ETO in 2012.
With 33 goals, Lekić was the top scorer for Serbia at the EHF EURO 2012 as they finished in fourth place, she has played 70 matches for Serbia and scored 357 goals.
Jovanka Radičević sees coming to ŽRK Vardar SCBT as a new sporting challenge.
“I always love new challenges in sport, I like to try something new and see how it will be. Vardar is a team that has great ambitions and I want to fit in.
“I love Skopje, Macedonia, and I believe that my decision to play for Vardar is true and that I chose the right club. I know most of the players who will play in the team, but I always say that name is not enough, we need to do our best,” says Radičević.
As part of the Montenegrin team, Radičević won the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia and an Olympic silver medal in London.
In Serbia, Radičević scored 40 goals and was second best shooter in the team. Throughout her club career, she has seven national championship titles with Budućnost and seven cup titles in Montenegro (2005-2011) as well as two Women’s EHF Cup titles in 2006 and 2010, and one Hungarian league and cup title with Györi Audi ETO.
