Jaszka out for Füchse match at Madrid

One Pole in, one Pole out: As Mariusz Jurkiewicz just returned on the court in the jersey of Atlético Madrid after his hand injury occured at the world championship in Spain, his country-fellow from Füchse Berlin Bartłomiej Jaszka is out for the first leg of the VELUX EHF Champions League Last 16.

Füchse manager Bob Hanning confirmed ehfCL.com on Friday that the playmaker is unable to play on Sunday (18:00 hrs, live on ehfTV.com) at Madrid due to an appendix disease and stomach problems.

Jaszka had already missed the dress rehearsal for the VELUX EHF Champions League match on Wednesday, when Berlin tied 29:29 at Balingen in the German League.

Right before this match the Polish international was taken to the hospital for an in-dept examination, on Friday he was ruled out for the match at Madrid.

The only positive news from the draw at Balingen was the comeback of German international Sven Sören Christophersen in the Füchse squad after being out after a knee injury for nearly four weeks.

On Madrid side, goalkeeper Adnan Šabanović had undergone a successful surgery of his crucial ligament on Monday. The rupture occurred in the last match of Atlético in the group phase of the continental top flight at Veszprém. Šabanović is out for the rest of the season and will be replaced by Magnus Dahl and Antonio Diaz.

The last season’s finalists have won their two recent matches in the Spanish league: The Jurkiewicz comeback took place in the 33:20 against Puerto Sagunto last Sunday, on Wednesday they won 35:31 at Cangas and remain on second position, but already five points below still unbeaten league leaders FC Barcelona.

The rematch of both rivals in Berlin will be the ehfTV Match of the Week on Sunday 24 March.
