Spain book berth at the Women's World ChampionshipSpain vs. FYR Macedonia 27:16 (first leg 27:21 in favour of Spain) In December 2012, scores of Macedonian fans travelled to Serbia to support their team at the Women's EHF EURO 2012. This December, the World Championship will also take in Serbia. However, this time the Macedonian supporters can save the trip, as their heroines will not be there. The 21:27 home defeat against Spain in the first leg of the European play-offs for the final tournament was followed by an even clearer Spanish victory in Soria on Friday evening. From the start, Spain left no doubt that they were determined to finish the job and book the ticket for Serbia as quickly as possible, and as FYR Macedonia's players received four two-minute suspensions for Macedonia already in the first half, that job was relatively plain sailing for the hosts. Spain got ahead from the start and increased their lead throughout to the first 30 minutes, until they were up by eight goals at half-time. After the break the home team did not look back either, but increased their lead to 11 goals which was also the difference at the final whistle. FYR Macedonia's Biljana Crvenkoska became top scorer in the match with seven goals, while Marta Lopez Herrero was top scoring player for Spain with five goals. TEXT: Peter Bruun / ts |
