Mørk completes Aalborg squad
Danish champions Aalborg Håndbold believe to have found the successor to Norwegian star Kristian Kjelling, who left for Danish league rivals Bjerringbro-Silkeborg at the end of last season.
Aalborg announced the signing of 25-year-old backcourt player Marcus Mørk, a player who is among the candidates for national coach Ulrik Wilbek´s EHF EURO 2014 squad.
Mørk is joining on a three-year contract from Mors-Thy Håndbold, the surprise package in Denmark last season, as they reached the semi-finals in the championship, granting them a place in the EHF Cup.
In Aalborg, however, Mørk gets the chance to play in the Champions League.
“I feel that I am moving to a bigger club – a club where I get the chance to battle for the championship, the cup and the Super Cup, as well as playing in the Champions League,” Marcus Mørk told ehfCL.com.
Only pressure from within
A recent shoulder operation will sideline him until the beginning of October which means that he will be missing the start of his new team´s VELUX EHF Champions League campaign, but that has not dampened his spirits.
“I am really looking forward to measuring myself against some of the world´s greatest teams and greatest players. I have never played any European Cup matches yet, so of course I am looking forward to testing myself in that environment,” said Mørk.
The fact that he had been signed as a successor to star player Kristian Kjelling´s does not seem to put any particular pressure on him.
“I do not really see myself as his replacement. Kristian Kjelling is an extremely good handball player and there is only one Kristian Kjelling. The pressure I feel comes from within, as I demand a lot from myself every time I play or train,” concluded Mørk.
Never say never
“Through the signing of Marcus Mørk, our squad is complete. Of course, you should never say never, but the way things look, we have the squad we need for the coming season,” Aalborg´s director Jan Larsen told ehfCL.com.
“Our squad looks very interesting, also with some young players who are developing fast, so I think we have a really fine team,” added Larsen.
Aalborg are in Group D of the Europe’s premier club competition, where their first task will be away against SG Flensburg-Handewitt between 18 and 22 September.
