Russia defeat Danes in extra-time thriller
There were no major surprises in the semi-finals of the Women’s 19 EHF EURO, as Russia and Hungary advance to meet in the final on Sunday 11 August at 17:00 hrs.
Russia vs Denmark 35:33 after extra-time
The first semi-final proved to be a cracker, with hosts Denmark bidding to eliminate to unbeaten Russian side.
Backed by 1,800 fans in the Koldinhallerne, Denmark took a half-time lead of 13:12. However, the Russians were not to be denied as the teams exchanged goals throughout the 60 minutes and with a final score of 26:26, extra-time was required.
Despite the best efforts of the home team, who kept the score level after the first extra-time period, Russia gained a lead at the vital time and never looked back, winning 35:33 with Anna Vyakhireva leading the Russian attack with 11 goals.
Hungary vs Norway 28:20
After the exhilarating opening match, the following semi-final failed to capture the imagination in the same way.
Hungary were in control from the beginning, forcing an early Norwegian time-out in the 11th minute, but it was of little use as Hungary stormed into a 16:9 half-time lead
Norway managed to step up their game in the second period, but could not close down the deficit and Hungary ran out 28:20 winners.
Sunday sees Denmark and Norway face off for the bronze medal at 14:30 hrs. and is followed by the main event, the final between Russia and Hungary at 17:00 hrs.
