 Leipzig hit hard by injuries
Before their crucial Women’s EHF Champions League match against Sävehof, HC Leipzig paid a high price for their eighth straight victory in German Bundesliga.
Line player Anne Müller and right back Anne Hubinger will miss the rest of the group matches and as both are German national team players they will miss the EHF EURO 2014 qualification matches against Russia next week.
Anne Müller tore her medial collateral ligament and will be out for at least three to four months, which also means that she will definitely miss the World Championship in Serbia.
Left handed Hubinger broke her right hand during the match against Buxtehuder SV on Wednesday, won by HCL 26:25 and had her surgery on Thursday.
She will be out for the remainder of the group matches, but might have a light chance to be in the German squad for the World Championship in December and will be available for the main round, should Leipzig progress.
Additionally, second line player Luisa Schule, also a member of the German squad, is out for eight weeks after an omphalic surgery and also will miss Leipzig’s next four European encounters.
The fourth long-term absence is pregnant goalkeeper and team captain Katja Schülke.
“This is a really tough situation after a costly victory. We have to stand even closer now with our team to manage the next few weeks.
“Tactically we will have to improvise a lot now, as we lack so many alternatives,” coach Thomas Örneborg was quoted on the HC Leipzig website on Thursday.
