Rasmussen still hopes to win group
Sören Rasmussen has been a goalkeeper at SG Flensburg-Handewitt since 2010. Before joining the German side, he enjoyed seven years at Aalborg Handball. Now the 37-year-old Dane faces his former club and he spoke to ehfCL.com ahead of Sunday’s VELUX EHF Champions League clash, which result can weight a lot in the race for the top position in Group D.
ehfCL.com: On Saturday your team head towards northern Denmark. The destination: Aalborg. Are you already a bit excited?
Sören Rasmussen: Yes, of course. It is something special for me to play against my former club. I had seven successful and enjoyable years in Aalborg and the club provided a big boost for my career.
ehfCL.com: What were the highlights in that time?
Sören Rasmussen: Clearly the Danish Championship win in 2010. In my last year in Aalborg this title was the perfect final. Against Kolding we won the third and deciding game in penalty throws. I am glad to experience this championship.
ehfCL.com: Are you looking forward to meeting many familiar faces?
Sören Rasmussen: Now Aalborg have a completely different team to 2010. Havard Tvedten played in my first years in Aalborg, then he moved to Spain and returned only recently.
Otherwise I know only the managers. The newly formed team have impressed, there are many talents and it looks good for the future of Aalborg Handball.
ehfCL.com: Both teams are looking good to progress to the Last 16 and are challenging for the top positions in the group. What is your prediction for the top three in Group D?
Sören Rasmussen: Our game on Sunday will be a tight affair. We have gained a lot of self-confidence, as have Aalborg through their good results.
With a win against us they would go second, but we want to defend this place. It looks good for Hamburg to hold on to first place, but I don’t think it impossible for Aalborg to win in Hamburg, so there is still some hope for us.
ehfCL.com: Your contract with SG Flensburg-Handewitt ends in June. Do you know what is next in your career?
Sören Rasmussen: It´s clear that I won't stay at Flensburg. I had a nice time, but I would like to have more responsibility and more playing time from now on. There were offers from the Bundesliga and France, the best thing for me and my family is a return to Denmark.
