Györ celebrate new arena with big win

It took Györi Audi ETO some time to really get their engines running when they hosted IK Sävehof on Sunday in the last round of the Women's EHF Champions League, but in the second half the home side overwhelmed their adversaries to take a 12-goal win.

Due to HC Lokomotiva’s 29:24 away defeat against Viborg HK earlier on Sunday afternoon, Sävehof were sure to proceed to the main round even before the match against Györ.

Györ were assured a first-place finish on the Group C table following their fourth win two weeks ago against Viborg, but the question of points for the main round still made Sunday’s game important for both teams.

The hosts also had an additional incentive – a positive result in their first game in the brand new Audi Arena.

The match began with an even first half, during which Sävehof were able to keep pace with the favourites for the entire period. The Swedish champions were even leading 7:6 then 8:7 before the home team tightened their grip towards half-time.

When the whistle signaled the end of the first 30 minutes, Györ were leading by two.

From the start of the second half, Györ intensified their pace in both defence and attack. Throughout the second 30 minutes the home team increased their lead constantly, ultimately creating a 12-goal gap that earned them the two points.

Eduarda Amorim from Györ and Jenny Alm from Sävehof were the top scoring players of the game, both with seven goals.

Györ take eight points with them to the main round, while Sävehof take just one from the group matches.
