EURO starts with a thrilling draw in Györ
The co-host of the EHF EURO 2014 Hungary began their campaign with an exciting 29:29 draw against Group A opponent Russia on Sunday in Group A, while the record EHF EURO champions from Norway started with a convincing win over Romania 27:19 in Group D.
Russian right wing Yana Uskova equalised the score against Hungary in the Audi Arena in Györ at 29:29 with ten seconds left, and when Hungary's final attack failed to convert to a goal, each team had to settle for the one point from a draw.
This result pushed Spain to the group's top position after they recorded a 29:22 win against Poland in the opening Women's EHF EURO 2014 Group A match.
In Debrecen, Norway showed that they might be a very strong contender for the EHF EURO 2014 title, as they defeated Romania 27:19 after having built up a 13-goal lead early in the second half.
"Our heads were in the game from the beginning, the whole team is very focused. We have been working a lot with our defence ahead of the championship, and today the girls were playing the defence they know best," said head coach Thorir Hergeirsson.
However the early top spot in the Group B belongs to Denmark on the goal difference as one the tournament's biggest favourites defeated Ukraine 32:23. Ukraine were only able to keep up with Denmark for the first 25 minutes, but Jan Pytlick's team eventually took a convincing nine-goal win.
