First four teams make it to the main round
Fans in Audi Arena had something to celebrate on Tuesday as Hungary recorded a 29:23 win against Poland, booking the ticket to the main round. Hungary delighted the home crowd in Györ, when they recorded their first win of the tournament in their second Group A match of the Women's EHF EURO 2014.
The home side were let down in their first match (29:29 against Russia) by clearly visible nerves that were nowhere to be seen against Poles.
Earlier on Tuesday the first Group A match ended with a 25:24 victory to Spain, who have qualified for the main round and left Russia to determine their fate on Thursday in a direct encounter for the remaining place with Poland. It was a challenging game for both sides, which ultimately saw Spain come out on top with the victory - and therefore a berth in the main round.
Norway topped the Group B after a convincing 34:23 victory against Ukraine in the Fönix Hall in Debrecen.
The win sees Norway following Denmark into the tournament's next phase. The Danish team had already booked its ticket to the main round courtesy of a 29:29 draw against Romania earlier in the day.
A stellar performance by Romania's Adriana Tacalie and Cristina Neagu was not enough to threaten Denmark who needed a last-second effort to reach a 29:29 draw in Group B
There were three seconds left on the clock when Danish line player Susan Thorsgaard put all her efforts in a last shot, which hit the back of the net and not only granted Denmark a 29:29 draw, but also a berth in the main round of the Women's EHF EURO 2014.
The last main round berth available from this group will be decided between Romania and Ukraine on Thursday.
