GROUP 1 MATCH REVIEW: A high-tempo game ends with Vardar overcoming Krim Ljubljana

Flawless Vardar power past hapless Krim

After a disappointing defeat in the first round of Group 1, Vardar Skopje are back on track.

The Macedonian powerhouse recorded their highest scoring win in European top-flight competition by beating Krim Ljubljana 41:30.

With Vardar rising to fourth place with five points, the Slovenian team is currently bottom of the group and needs four perfect outings in the remaining matches to snatch a quarter-final spot.

GROUP 1

WHC Vardar SCBT (MKD) vs RK Krim Mercator (SLO) 41:30 (21:12)

It was only a week ago when Vardar produced one of their worst outings of this season losing 26:23 to HC Leipzig. But the Macedonian powerhouse learnt their lesson and came out firing on all cylinders against Krim Ljubljana.

Focused on their task, the hosts enjoyed a perfect start to the match. Racking up a 5:1 lead after only five minutes, Vardar’s aggressiveness and determination worked wonders in the first half as Krim had little to no reaction.

With an amazing Leynaud between the posts and propelled by Penezic, Dembele and Radicevic – the latter scoring three consecutive goals in the space of a minute - Vardar took a commanding lead at half-time (21:12).

The gap was extended in the second half as the hosts took no prisoners. An airtight Vardar defense gave way to a flurry of counterattacks, which provided the Macedonian juggernaut with easy goals.

The 41:30 win for Vardar was more than justified in the end.

Radicevic and Dembele were Vardar’s top scorers with eight and seven goals respectively, while Mavsar was Krim’s top scorer with eight goals followed by Allison Pineau (5 goals), who made her first trip to her former club.
