Kadetten beat Szeged to stay in the Last 16 raceKadetten Schaffhausen did what they had to do to keep their dreams of qualifying to the VELUX EHF Champions League knockout stage alive and they did that by beating Hungarian side Pick Szeged. The home side kept their lead for the whole match and never let their visitors come dangerously close. GROUP D Kadetten Schaffhausen (SUI) vs MOL-Pick Szeged (HUN) 32:29 (19:15) Despite the heroics of José Manuel Sierra, Schaffhausen managed to take an early lead and held onto it for most of the first half. The notorious defense of the visitors lacked aggression and Szeged were also affected by the injury of centre back Niko Mindegía in the 10th minute. As usual, Manuel Liniger was the most prolific scorer for the Swiss outfit but overall the players shared the burden of goalscoring as Kadetten found the way to Szeged’s net with ease. Juan Carlos Pastor’s pep talk in the break worked as Szeged started to creep back with some excellent saves from Piotr Wyszomirski and goals from Ferenc Ilyés and Rajko Prodanovic. However, Kadetten once again gathered momentum and reinstalled their four-goal advantage and when Liniger scored his seventh goal to extend their lead to five, the game was as good as won with seven minutes left on the clock. Schaffhausen are still in the race for qualification but it seems likely that the Swiss outfit will need a result at Dunkerque in the last round to reach the Last 16. TEXT: Bence Mártha / bc |
