Umag, Guardes and Ankara book spot in Cup Winners’ Cup Round 3Three teams are ready for Round 3 of the last edition of the Women's Cup Winners' Cup after coming out on top in their respective double headers they played this weekend. Croatian team ZRK Umag will be looking forward to facing ÉRD HC from Hungary after they eliminated LK Zug Handball from Switzerland. In the first match on Saturday, Zug led 13:11 at half-time, but Umag stepped into gear in the second half and eventually won 29:27. Sunday’s match was an even closer affair as Umag only won 25:24 (10:10). Mecalia Atletico Guardes enjoyed a considerably easier double header. The Spanish side defeated Bnei Hertzeliya from Israel 39:23 in the first leg, after even leading no less than 20:5 at half-time. The second leg ended 33:26 in favour of the Guardes, who will face Zvezda Zveningorod form Russia in Round 3. Ankara Yeminahalle BSK can look forward to meeting BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Reg from Belarus after sending SSV Dornbirn Schoren out in the weekend’s third double header. 11 goals from Dornbirn’s centre back Johanna Rauch did not save the Austrian team from a 36:25 defeat in the first match against the Turkish team; and on Sunday the hosts won 40:14. Another Turkish team, Ardesen GSK, may be in a bit of trouble after losing 30:25 in Sweden to Skuru IK. Their chance for redemption comes next weekend when Round 2 of the Women’s Cup Winners’ Cup continues. TEXT: Peter Bruun / ts |
