The road to the Men's EHF EURO 2020 has begun

The Men's EHF EURO 2020 will be a milestone in handball history as it will be the first European Championship with 24 teams. And for nine nations vying for a place at the final tournament, the long road to it started on Friday.

The draw for the first qualification phase took place in Vienna and saw the nine nations being drawn to three groups of three teams each.

Greece Turkey Italy
Cyprus Estonia Luxembourg
Faroe Islands Kosovo Georgia

The winners of each group will qualify for the second phase, the main EHF EURO 2020 Qualification. The playing periods are 2 to 6 November 2016, 4 to 8 January 2017 and 11 to 15 January 2017.

The second possibility to qualify for the second phase of the EHF EURO 2020 Qualification is the European IHF Trophy which will be played in June 2017. The six teams that do not qualify from the first phase will join this tournament.

Registered already for the trophy event are Albania (to be confirmed), Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Ireland, Moldova and Malta.

The Men's EHF EURO 2020 will be played in Sweden, Austria and Norway in January 2020.
