Top two in group D tussle in Bucharest

MIDWEEK PREVIEW: There is a genuine top match in group D when C. S. Dinamo Bucuresti and GOG meet on Wednesday evening, while in group B THW Kiel are looking to extend their unbeaten streak to three games against Meshkov Brest


Top two in group D tussle in Bucharest

Second place welcome first in group D on Wednesday when C. S. Dinamo Bucuresti and GOG make an early start to the third round of the VELUX EHF Champions League.

While the Romanian home team is in second position with three points, the Danish visitors arrive at the first European meeting between the two clubs with two clear wins under the belt.

In group B, unbeaten THW Kiel are looking to extend their streak to three games against Meshkov Brest, who are currently sitting last in the group, losing both their games.

In Finland, Cocks and Tatran Presov face off in the hunt for both side’s first points in group C.

GROUP B

THW Kiel (GER) vs HC Meshkov Brest (BLR)

  • Kiel appear to be an offensive juggernaut this season, scoring 67 goals in their first two games, sitting fourth in the attacking ranking, after Barça (73 goals), GOG and Veszprém (both 71 goals)

  • after last round’s win against Veszprém, Filip Jicha can also earn his first European win in front of Kiel’s fans and the German side can extend their unbeaten streak to three games

  • Brest are currently on a four-game losing streak and won only once in their past six games in the competition, also boasting one away win in the last 14 matches

  • Kiel won all six mutual meetings between the two sides in European competition, by an average of six goals per game

GROUP C

Cocks (FIN) vs Tatran Presov (SVK)

  • the sides sit joint-bottom of group C on the back of two convincing defeats in the opening two rounds

  • with Cocks’ 44 goals and Presov’s 47, they are the two lowest scoring sides in groups C/D

  • Cocks coach Gintaras Savukynas sees this match as an "opportunity to make a positive change in our game after the start of the Champions League has not been as good as we hoped it would be"

  • they have met once in Europe before, in the CL 2017/18 qualification tournament, which Presov won 30:27

GROUP D

C.S. Dinamo Bucuresti (ROU) vs GOG (DEN)

  • the match will be the first meeting between the two teams in a European Cup competition

  • GOG arrive with two straight wins, while Dinamo have a draw and a win

  • while GOG defeated Chekhovkskie Medvedi 38:31 over the weekend, Dinamo were in domestic league action with a 28:26 victory away against SCM Politechnica Timisoara

  • “From the start of the competition, I have seen Dinamo as group favourites together with Plock,” says GOG coach Nicolej Krickau
