Slagelse Wins Danish Championship

Slagelse DT can be full of confidence before the Champions League finals against Lada Togliatti. The team of Anja Andersen won the Danish championship in a convincing style on Thursday evening.

After winning the first leg of the finals 30-19 at home against Viborg HK, Slagelse left no doubt in the second leg either. Due to the rules of the Danish championship play-offs, Viborg would have only needed a one goal win at home in order to play a third and decisive match. However, in spite of a massive support from the vast majority of the 3000 spectators in Viborg Stadionhal, the title holders were not close to it: Slagelse won by 32-25.

Traffic was the biggest problem

Actually, the Danish traffic seemed to be the biggest problem for Slagelse this evening. On their way to Viborg their bus stuck in a traffic jam on the highway and the team reached Viborg Stadionhal only half an hour before throw off.

This did not bother the visitors much, though. After a 1-0 lead for Viborg, Slagelse took the initiative soon and took a 11-8 lead. Viborg were still playing well this period and they managed to equalise at 11-11.

Slagelse increased the pace and they scored five in a row to make it 16-11. The half time score was 16-12.

Slagelse left no doubt about the outcome of the match in the second half. It did not take long to increase their lead to seven goals and this difference remained till the end.

“I’m extremely proud of the team. The players have been working really hard to achieve this,” Slagelse coach Anja Andersen said after the match.

“Of course, we lost some games during the season, but we have not lost a single point in the league: I think this is simply fantastic,” added Anja Andersen, who can now concentrate entirely on preparing for the Champions League finals against Lada. The first will take place in Russia next Sunday, on May 13th.
