Flensburg's Danish Star Suffers Knee Problems

One of Germany’s four male Champions League participants, SG Flensburg Handewitt may suffer a severe blow for next season. Former Danish international, Søren Stryger, may have to stop for a longer period due to acute knee problems.

“I agreed with the club to give my knee as much rest as possible over the summer, but when I started the pre-season trainings, it was aching again,” said the 32-year old right winger. Stryger was sidelined for several matches last season because of this knee injury.

Flensburg’s doctor, Hauke Mommsen, said that a surgery may be necessary, but it may not even be enough to cure the damage. Mommsen did not rule out that Stryger’s career might end because of the problems: “He pays the price of 10 years in top sport now,” Hauke Mommsen told the Danish newspaper of Flensburg, Flensborg Avis. 

Wiser in a month 

“Right now I don’t know, if my career has come to an end. I expect to know more in a month or so,” Søren Stryger told the Danish newspaper BT.

After the World Championship last winter, Søren Stryger ended his national team career with 151 caps for Denmark to concentrate on his club career.

Stryger started in Danish third league club, HMH Maribo. Later, he played for Vrold-Skanderborg and GOG before joining Flensburg in 2001.

In case Søren Stryger should end his career, Flensburg already have a replacement on the right wing: the Icelandic international, Alexander Petterson, came from TV Grossvallstadt during the summer. According to manager, Anders Dahl-Nielsen, no more players will be signed even if Stryger would not return.
