Despite the victory, the CL side are not in top form yet. Coacg Leif Gautestad (pictured) can be satisfied with the points.

Aalborg Start Danish League with Victory

Aalborg DH – one of Denmark’s three teams in the Women’s Champions League – won their first league match of the season. The CL team played a local derby and won away against newly promoted Frederikshavn. The result was 27-24 for Aalborg.

Logvin was the top scorer as usualThe visitors started the match in convincing style, taking a six goal lead soon at 8-2 and 9-3. At half time Aalborg were still four goals up, 15-11.

However, the easy start seemed to have cost the favourites some of their concentration, and in the second half the 1049 spectators saw Frederikshavn manage to get as close as one goal. The score was 15-16 towards the middle of the half when Aalborg finally increased their pace and intensity to secure a three-goal win.

Coach satisfied with two points

“I am satisfied with the two points, but we seemed to lose too much concentration in the second half. We forgot that handball is really a very simple game: it is all about scoring goals and preventing your opponent from scoring,” Aalborg coach Leif Gautestad told Eurohandball.com after the match.

“Tonight we were really good at preventing goals, but in the second half were we not good at shooting the ball into the goal,” the Norwegian coach added.

Tanja Logvin was top scorer for Aalborg with 9 goals. Aalborg missed their wingers, Louise Pedersen on the right and Matilda Boson on the left. Both are injured, but they are expected to be fit in good time for the Champions League qualifiers at the end of this month.

Denmark’s two other teams in the Women’s Champions League, Slagelse and Viborg, will play their first league matches of the season at the weekend. Slagelse will host KIF Vejen and Viborg will travel to SK Aarhus.
