Flensburg out of German Cup
Two good news, two bad news for the SG Flensburg-Handewitt: on Wednesday evening Flensburg lost the German cup match against HSG Nordhorn 31:34 (13:18), so the dream to reach the Final Four in Hamburg is over in the third round already.
Especially the attack of Flensburg was too weak break through the strong Nordhorn defence. As Nordhorn scored to make it 24:18, everybody thought the match was “safe and secure” for the home team, but Flensburg started to fight back. The guests equalised at 27:27 and 29:29.
Nordhorn decided the match at the end with their strong defence and two goals to the 31:29.
“We lost the match in the first halftime,” said SG’s wing player, Lars Christiansen.
However, the defeat in the Cup was not the only bad news for SG’s manager, Fynn Holpert: Nordhorn’s best player, Holger Glandorf, announced at the end of the match that he would sign for another two years with his current club. The right back had an offer from Flensburg as well.
“I’m disappointed about his decision. He did not call me, he just sent me an SMS,” said Holpert.
But Holpert also had some good news for the press: after the coach, Kent-Harry Andersson extended his contract until 2010, the wing players, Anders Eggert and Torge Johannsen, will also stay in Flensburg for a long time.
Eggert signed a new contract until 2011, Johanssen until 2012.
“This is a very good news. These are young players and they are the future of the SG,” said Holpert.
“I want to stay here until the end of my career,” commented Eggert.
On the other hand, German national player, Frank von Behren, will not stay with SG. He will have to look for a new club. His contract will expire at the end of the season and it was not extended due to his various injury problems.
