Gummersbach have an exciting week before the Valur game with news about transfers and a new sponsor.
Sigurdsson about to leave, Grundsten to come
Coming and going at the German Champions League participants: HSV Hamburg sign Swedish national player, Nicklas Grundsten (24). The pivot will join the team of Martin Schwalb next season for two years. Currently the Swedish plays at home for Hammarby.
However, VfL Gummersbach might lose an important player. In this case nobody knows exactly when Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson will move to Rhein Neckar Löwen Mannheim.
His contract with Gummersbach in valid until 2009.
“Yes, I signed a three-year contract in Mannheim,” admitted the Icelandic international who was the topscorer of the last World Championship in Germany.
“Mannheim made an offer to VfL, but our management said that I have to play here until 2009. I’m the captain here and I don’t want to cause any problems in Gummersbach,” Sigurdsson added.
The director replies
"Sigurdsson has a contract here until 2009 and he will have to stay until the end of this contract," said VfL Gummersbach director Stefan Hecker.
The Icelandic star arrived in Gummersbach in 2005 after winning the EHF Cup with Tusem Essen. His coach was Youri Chevzov then who is the coach in Mannheim today.
“Youri is the main reason of my decision,” said Sigurdsson. “I wanted to start something new. It’s a decision for Mannheim, not one against Gummersbach.”
The VfL management and supporters can also be pleased about good news: the energy company “Moeller” will be the new main sponsor of the club. The company signed a contract until 2010.
