Viborg finish group phase in style

In spite of still being without several injured players, Viborg HK managed to finish the group stage of the Women’s Champions League with a convincing 39:30 home win against FTC Budapest Bank.

The match had no practical importance to Viborg, who were sure to qualify for the main round from second position in Group D. Budapest, on the other hand, would have finished third and thereby have qualified for the Cup Winners’ Cup in case of a win.

However, the Hungarians never even got near a win, as Viborg were dominating from the start. Apart from 0:0 the score was only equal at 1:1. From then on, the Danes took the initiative and the lead, and from 3:1 the Viborg lead was increased to 7:3, 15:7 – and 20:11 at half time.

Harvest of goals

With Viborg being 9 goals up, the matter was practically decided already before the second half started, and the concentration among the Viborg dropped considerably part of the time, but still the home team gave the 1639 spectators in Viborg Stadionhal some entertainment with a lot of goals, several of them very spectacular.

Budapest were supported enthusiastically by 20 supporters, who had taken the long trip from the Hungarian capital to Viborg to support their team, but there is no doubt that their trip felt even longer after the big defeat and the exit from European handball for this season.

“I was happy about of fine start and about the fact that we managed to stay focused for so long”, said one of Viborg’s Danish internationals, Rikke Skov, after the match. Rikke Skov scored 9 goals for Viborg, while Gabriela Juhàsz scored the same amount for the guests. Viborg finish second in Group D with 7 points for their 6 matches – but far after the group winners, Romanian champions Oltchim Valcea. Budapest finished fourth and last with 2 points.
