Only two CL teams in Danish Cup finals

Only two out of the total of five Danish teams in the EHF Champions League have managed to qualify for the finals in the Danish Cup, which are going to take place in the NRGI Arena of Aarhus on December 27th 2008.

In the women’s competitions, Danish champions and ruling Cup winners Viborg HK will be the only Champions League team in the final, who have made it through to the last phase of the competition without any problems, while the other two Danish participants in the CL got lost along the way. FCK Håndbold were sent out already at an early stage by Team Esbjerg from the lower half of the Danish league, while Ikast/Brande lost at home in the semi-final to current number four in the league, KIF Vejen, who will therefore be Viborg’s opponents in the final.

Drama in the men’s semi-final

In the Men’s Cup Danish champions FCK Håndbold were sent out in the quarterfinal round through a defeat of no less than 41:27 away to Bjerringbro/Silkeborg (BSV) which meant that GOG Svendborg TGI was the only CL team left for the semi-finals. Here they had to play away against none other than BSV Saturday, and for the first three quarters of the match, BSV seemed to be heading for the final, leading 29:22 with a quarter of an hour left. However, in an almost insane drama, GOG managed to turn the course of the game in a simply incredible way and win 33:32.

“I am still not really sure what happened! We played an awful match, and my own performance was not too pretty either – but we all kept fighting all the way, and that turned out to do the thing for us!” said Danish international Kasper Nielsen from GOG after the match.

In the final, GOG will be meeting league colleagues Team Tvis Holstebro, who won their semi-final match 36:32 at home against HC Midtjylland from the 1. Division
- the second best league in Denmark.
