Draw for the Play-off matches
1st leg 6/7 June 2009, 2nd leg 13/14 June 2009

The matches of phase 1 of the European qualification process to the 2009 Women’s World Championship in China were completed about two weeks ago.

The matches were played in two groups of six teams and one group of five teams in NED, MNE and POL. The first ranked team of each group qualified for the play-off matches (qualification phase 2) taking place on 6/7 June and 13/14 June 2009. The teams proceeding from qualification phase 1 to the play-offs are: NED from group 1, MNE from group 2 and SVK from group 3.

As it was published on Eurohandball.com on 8 December, the draw for the play-offs will be carried out on the occasion of the 2009 Women’s EHF EURO final weekend in Skopje (FYR Macedonia). Please find below mentioned more information regarding the draw as well as a current status of the participating teams.

2009 Women’s WCh (Qualification Europe) – Draw for the Play-off matches

Date:  14 December 2008 
Time: 12.30 hrs.
Venue: Boris Trajkovski Arena, Skopje, FYR Macedonia
Places for Europe: 11 teams (including RUS as World Champions)
Total Entries: 33 teams
Qualified for Final Tournament: 4 teams: RUS (defending champion), CHN (organiser) and the 2 best ranked teams from the EHF Euro 2008 in MKD (RUS excluded)

Qualified for Play-Offs:

1. From ECh MKD:  13 teams: AUT, BLR, CRO, DEN, ESP, FRA, GER,HUN, MKD, NOR, POR, ROU, SRB, SWE, UKR
2. From qualification groups: 3 teams:NED, MNE, SVK 

Procedure of the draw:

7 Teams
in pot 1: 
AUT, FRA, POR, SRB, (teams ranked 13 to 16 in MKD)
NED, MNE, SVK(qualified through qualification groups)
2 Teams
in pot 2: 
BLR, DEN(teams ranked 11 and 12 in MKD)
7 Teams
in pot 3:               

CRO, HUN, MKD, ROU, SWE, UKR, ESP or GER or NOR (teams ranked 3 to 10 in MKD who do not qualify directly to the WCh in CHN) 

Procedure:

One ball of pot 2 is drawn to pot 1 and one ball of pot 2 is drawn to pot 3.
One team of pot 1 is drawn against one team of pot 3 (8 times).
For each pairing the home and away right will be drawn.

Playing dates for the play-off matches:
First leg:6/7 June 2009/Second leg:13/14 June 2009

The winners of the play-off matches will be qualified for 2009 World Championship in China.
