Ladies on court
The Women’s Champions League will continue this weekend with eight games across Europe. All eight matches will be live on TV and two of them will be available on ehfTV.com all over the world.
The women’s group matches are at halfway. After three games played there are two unbeaten teams, the Danish Ikast and the Austrian Hypo.
Group A
The first game of 2009 will be played in Skopje on Friday at 20hrs. Kometal will host Zvenigorod exactly where 2008 ended with a memorable European Championship Final.
This will be the last chance for Kometal, still without a point, while the title holder Russians will also need the two points to stay in the battle for the first two places.
Ikast will play against the Hungarian Győr at home on Saturday. The Danes won in Hungary with a superb second half and the game promises another big fight. Ikast could get just one step from the Main Round with a victory.
Group B
The other unbeaten team, Hypo Niederösterreich, will be in for a very difficult task in Podgorica. The young and upcoming Buducnost have three points and fight for a main round place with FCK.
Anja Andersen's FCK will play at home on Sunday against the pointless Elda and it seems to be an obligatory victory for the hosts.
Group C
The weekend may be decisive in this group. At this point anything can still happen with Valcea and Larvik standing at four points, Podravka and Togliatti at two.
The Croatian Podravka will host Larvik – with a few European Champions in the squad – on Saturday. Larvik won by only one goal at home, so this game and the final result may be important at the end of the group phase.
The last game of the round on Sunday evening will be between Valcea and Togliatti in Romania.
Group D
Three teams have four points, so the competition for the two qualification places is tense.
Viborg will visit Nürnberg, which will be a last chance for the Germans if they want to keep fighting for a better position. The match will be played on Saturday.
Metz caused a major surprise and have beaten Krim in Slovenia. This will be an opportunity for the team of playmaker Lekic to fight back and take two crucially important points from France.
