Eggert: "We are fighting for second place"

With the Danish national team left winger Anders Eggert won the silver medal at the 2011 World Championship in Sweden. Now he is back in Flensburg and looks forward to the Champions League.

ehfCL.com spoke to the 28-year-old about about the World Championships, the VELUX EHF Men’s Champions League and about his future at SG Flensburg-Handewitt.

ehfCL.com: Are you very happy about your Silver medalfrom Sweden?

Anders Eggert: It was a great result that even surprised ourselves. For me it was the first time ever to win a medal with the national team. In addition it was also nice to qualify for the Olympic qualification tournament next year.

Of course, we were a bit sad after the final whistle of the final, as it was our first time to lose during the entire tournament. But France was a very strong opponent, and we had some bad luck.

ehfCL.com: Now you're back to club handball and have already played your first games for the SG Flensburg-Handewitt. In what shape is the team?

Anders Eggert: We achieved two clear victories in the German league, showing quite a good performance. Unfortunately we lost Oscar Carlén, who injured his knee and will miss the rest of the season.

ehfCL.com: What is still possible in Group D?

Anders Eggert: For us it is no longer realistic to reach first place. So we are fighting for second place. The upcoming match against Ciudad Real will be the key.

ehfCL.com: At the first encounter in Spain you clearly lost with eight goals. Is this task too difficult?

Anders Eggert: Renovalia Ciudad Real is really a super team with a very big squad. Especially their defence with goalkeeper Arpad Sterbik is very strong. We could see that in the World Championship semi-final between Denmark and Spain, where we once more learned that we have a chance against any Spanish team if we can keep up the pace and play good in defence.

ehfCL.com: Besides Oscar Carlén also Thomas Mogensen and Michael Knudsen will miss the game. Will your squad be a bit small with only eleven professionals?

Anders Eggert: We are indeed very few. But in the German league we have recently shown that we can compensate.

ehfCL.com: Before Christmas you renewed your contract with SG Flensburg-Handewitt until 2014. What was the deciding factor for this long-term decision?

Anders Eggert: For me the situation in Flensburg is perfect. I receive a lot of playing time and enjoy the faith of the coach. There was no doubt for me that I would stay. Besides that my girlfriend also likes Flensburg.

Flensburg’s fight for second place in Group D in their Round 8 match against last year’s EHF FINAL4 participants from Spain will be broadcast as a free-of-charge live web stream on ehfTV.com.
