Historic day for FA Göppingen

Second victory over their German neighbours Großwallstadt in the EHF Cup Final bring the first international title since 49 years.

Historic day for FA Göppingen

2010/11 Men’s EHF Cup – Final:

TV Grosswallstadt (GER) vs. Frisch Auf Göppingen (GER) 26:30 (9:15)
First leg result: 21:23

They had to wait for decades - now the dream became reality: 49 years after Frisch Auf Göppingen had won the Champions Cup (forerunner of the Champions League) in 1962 for the last time, they raised their next international trophy. By winning 30:26 at TV Großwallstadt in the German-German duel in the Final of the EHF Cup, Göppingen was in aggregate the clear winner after the 23:21 success on home ground in the first leg. The last national title was won by the Southern Germans 39 years ago, when they celebrated their last championship. Five years ago they had reached the Final of the EHF Cup, but missed the title in another German-German duel against TBV Lemgo. Since the installation of this competition by the EHF in 1993 German teams have won the EHF Cup 13 times – and including the Göppingen title the last eight straight times since 2004.

After the close first leg Göppingen played even more dominant in the away match. They led constantly and could bring the champagne to the freezer at the break when the margin was already six goals. Even as Großwallstadt reduced again to 19:20 in minute 48 they were not able to turn the game, as then Göppingen scored five consecutive times to the decisive 25:19.

“This was historic day for our club, simply incredible,” German national team player Christian Schöne said. Top scorers were Kneer with six goals for Großwallstadt and Kaufmann with seven goals for Göppingen.
