Denmark triumph at Women’s 19 EURO

The final tournament of the 2011 Women’s 19 European Championship took place between 4 and 14 August 2011 in the Netherlands. The tournament was for handball players born 1992 and younger.

In the first semi-final, Denmark didn’t give Austria a chance, winning by twelve goals. So the Danes, who took the clear lead from the early minutes of the match, were the first team to qualify for the Final of the W19 European Championship.

In the Final they were to meet the hosting nation, the Netherlands, who celebrated qualification to their “dream final” after the victory over Serbia in the second semi-final. After a tight result at half-time, the Dutch team managed to win with a nine-goal margin.

The Final Day at Topsportcentrum in Rotterdam was sold-out. 2,000 spectators witnessed Denmark winning the tournament by beating the Netherlands 29:27 after a four goal half-time lead. The physical Danish team was too strong for their Dutch opponents.

After the first edition in 1996 and 2007, Denmark took their third gold in the history of the Women’s 19 European Championships. Bronze went to Austria, who beat Serbia by 6 goals.
