Stability leads to success

While most of the top teams have revealed injury worries prior to the start of the European Championship, Denmark is one of the few countries whose injured players look like being ready to play the whole tournament. Therefore, the chances of the Scandinavian team achieving another top result at the continental event look very good.

Denmark’s experienced wing player Anders Eggert analyzes his side’s chances and their opponents, and names the top attributes that could mean a Scandinavian success.

ehf-euro.com: You’ll face Slovakia, Poland and the host Serbia at the European Championship in January. What do you think about these opponents, especially the organizer Serbia? Will it be a special moment to play against the host?

Anders Eggert: I don’t know that much about Slovakia, but we’ve played against Poland many times. It’s a strong team and it will definitely be a tough match.

Serbia has an excellent team and in an arena filled with Serbian spectators it will be a fierce match. It will certainly be something special to meet the hosts and they will do everything possible to deliver good results.

ehf-euro.com: What are the main qualities you can add to the team with your experience?

Anders Eggert: Fast breaks and stability.

ehf-euro.com: What are the main targets that you and NT coach Ulrik Wilbek have set for the upcoming EHF EURO?

Anders Eggert: We’re aiming for the top and the goal must be to reach the semi-finals. But we haven’t discussed our main goals in detail yet.

ehf-euro.com: You’ve been playing for the Danish NT for eight years, having made your debut back in 2003 against Hungary. What changes have happened during your time in the NT and how do you see the current team compared to that of previous years?

Anders Eggert: It’s rare that we play bad matches. We are more stable and we end up playing for the top positions in each championship. The difference from previous years is that we are now good at exploiting the skills of each player.

We vary our game, we have more game systems, and we have many different types of player.

ehf-euro.com: What are the strongest parts of the Danish team, that could prove decisive in surprising your opponents?

Anders Eggert: As I mentioned before, among our strongest attributes is our ability to adapt our game, our collective skills, and our many skillful players.

ehf-euro.com: Which teams do you expect to be in the semi-finals, and will there be a "surprise" team in your opinion?

Anders Eggert: My guess is France, Spain, Denmark and Serbia or Sweden.
