Füchse: Unexpected guests of the big party

They are debutants, but their hopes are flying high – Füchse Berlin are aiming high at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 this weekend.

Before their semi-final against German rivals THW Kiel, team captain Torsten Laen, former VELUX EHF FINAL4 winner Iker Romero and Markus Richwien talk about the chances of the Füchse in two video interviews for “Füchse TV”.

“If we play a catenacchio like Chelsea did against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final then we can beat THW Kiel” said Iker Romero, 2011 VELUX EHF FINAL4 winner with FC Barcelona, who has his own special recipe to stop favourite Kiel in the semi-final of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 on Saturday.

But being serious again, the Spaniards mentions the real tactic of Füchse Berlin. “Kiel are playing an incredible season, but if they have a bad day and we play how we are able to – strong defence, fully focussed in attack – we have a chance to reach the final.”

And Romero has an interesting expression for the role of Berlin in Cologne: “There is a big party and nobody expected us to be invited. But now we are the guest of this party – and we will show our strengths to the other guests.”

Romero had been part of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in 2011 – and since then he has been telling his team mates all about the event, the atmosphere, the arena and the thrilling excitement.

“I tell them that it is not our job only to be part of the VELUX EHF FINAL4, but to win it.”

His team mates Torsten Laen and Markus Richwien share the hopes of their left back.

“We only need to score one goal more than Kiel, then we have reached the final,” is the opinion of Richwien. For Laen, who had won the EHF Champions League in 2009 with Ciudad Real, it is “the greatest thing of all to be part of a VELUX EHF Champions League final. Although Kiel is playing an outstanding season we have the chance to beat them. Let’s wait and see if we have the power to reach this next sensation due to our club motto: The miracle continues.”

Richwien is absolutely looking forward to playing in Cologne. “It must be great to play in front of 20.000 spectators – and we will really enjoy this feeling.”
