Erlend Mamelund speaks to ehfCL.com ahead of Montpellier's clash with his old club Flensburg
Mamelund back in Flensburg, but in a different uniform
For four months Erlend Mamelund wore the shirt of the SG Flensburg-Handewitt. In February 2009 the Norwegian moved from Nordhorn to replace the injured Alen Muratovic. The 28-year-old talked to ehfCL.com ahead of his return to the Campus Hall with Montpellier Agglomération HB on Thursday evening (19.00 hrs).
ehfCL.com: What memories do you have of your time with SG Flensburg-Handewitt?
Erlend Mamelund: Flensburg has one of the best home arenas in the world. The atmosphere is fantastic. When I played my first game I was fulfilling one of my dreams. Unfortunately I got injured in the second game. Then I missed eight weeks.
ehfCL.com: Are you still in touch with some of the players at Flensburg?
Erlend Mamelund: Not regularly, but I chat with Thomas Mogensen on Twitter and on Facebook I write with the other Danish players - I spoke with Arnor Atlason recently. We know each other from when we were both at FC Copenhagen for a year. And Holger Glandorf, Steffen Weinhold, Maik Machulla and Tobias Karlsson are all known people for me from Nordhorn. Steffen Weinhold was in Norway this summer. Unfortunately we didn't manage to meet up, so we communicated via Facebook.
ehfCL.com: How did the last two years in Norway go for you?
Erlend Mamelund: From Flensburg I moved to FC Copenhagen, but when they closed I went back to Norway. I continued my studies of economics and now I have almost finished my masters degree. In handball I was with Haslum, the two times Norwegian champion.
ehfCL.com: Why did you move to Montpellier?
Erlend Mamelund: It wasn´t planned. The French called me and asked if I would consider a transfer. Montpellier is a club with big ambitions in Europe and has top players like Nikola Karabatic in its ranks. I couldn´t say no, and now I'm finishing the final part of of my masters degree in France.
ehfCL.com: What goals have you set for the VELUX EHF Champions League?
Erlend Mamelund: We have a strong squad that can beat any team on a good day, so we want to win every time we play. But the differences in the VELUX EHF Champions League between the teams are very small, so now we have to be on our guard as our group is difficult.
ehfCL.com: What do you expect from the game?
Erlend Mamelund: This could be the toughest match in the group. Flensburg has enjoyed a very good season, and they have fantastic support in the Campus Hall.
