Karaboue announces international retirement

Daouda Karaboue has announced that he will be ending his international career at the end of this month's World Championships.

The French goalkeeper announced his decision on French television channel Canal+ after another strong performance in France’s 32:20 win against Montenegro:

"Yes I'm making the most of this competition because I know it will be the last one."

Karaboue has taken part in every successful French campaign since 2004, the year he was first drafted in the French squad. He won two EHF EURO championships in 2006 and 2010, as well as two Olympic golds in 2008 and 2012.

Always second choice behind Thierry Omeyer, Karaboue has always been able to step up successfully whenever it was needed.

"It was tough at the beginning. But Thierry and I have been good friends since our years together in Montpellier, and having such a teammate forces you to progress," Karaboue told French newspaper L'Equipe.

In addition to his titles with France, he also won the EHF Champions League in 2001 with Montpellier, and currently plays his club handball with Toulouse.
