Gislason extends his stay in Kiel

The original contract was still valid until 2014, but Alfred Gislason set a sign to stop some rumours and signed an extended contract at THW Kiel until 2017.

“After the most successful season in our club’s history 2011/12 we have started a major transition of our team. And we are happy to fulfill this mission long-termed together with Alfred Gislason,” THW manager Klaus Elwardt was quoted on the club website.

Former Icelandic international and national team coach arrived in Kiel in 2008 after winning the EHF Champions League with Magdeburg in 2002 and later-on coaching German side VfL Gummersbach successfully.

In 2010 and 2012 he led THW to two titles in the VELUX EHF Champions League, additionally Kiel won nearly all possible titles on domestic ground since 2008, including the sensational all-time record of 34 victories in 34 matches in the previous Bundesliga season.

And now Gislason is looking forward for new challenges in the most successful German handball club ever.

“THW Kiel and Alfred Gislason belong together. We cooperate in a highly trustful way for a successful future of this club. I like to take the challenge to build-up a new team. The club and I have a framework for the future now to be filled with life,” Gislason said and added on the club website: “I am and I will be coach of Kiel.” Rumours had been spread before that Gislason might become German national team coach.
