Kretzschmar, Kehrmann and Ottke join the Charity Golf
With only one week until the VELUX EHF FINAL4 Charity Golf tournament, the star line-up to hit the fairways at the Golf & Country Club Velderhof can hardly be more luring, as a handful of celebrities joined the list of well-known handball legends ready to unpack their clubs and support the German Cancer Aid.
Two former German internationals Stefan Kretzschmar and Florian Kehrmann, a boxing star - Sven Ottke “The Phantom” and a former European champion in high-jump Carlo Thränhardt confirmed their participation at the tournament.
On Thursday, 23 May Kretzschmar, who played at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 Charity Golf last year as well, was announced as the best left wing from the 20 years of the EHF Champions League history. Kehrmann owns an accolade of medals from all major tournaments with Germany, winning the Olympic silver in 2004, the EHF European title in the same year and the World Championship title in 2007.
Ottke is the third European boxer to retire as an undefeated world champion. Thränhardt won the Indoor European Championships in 1983 in Budapest.
On Friday, 31 May 2013 at 12:00 hrs passionate golfers, former handball players, EHF officials, media representatives as well as some lucky auction winners will start to play for a good cause. In the upcoming second edition of the tournament, golfers have again the opportunity to team up with and compete against the stars, and to share the tournament’s special atmosphere. The entry fee will be donated to the German Cancer Aid.
The recent additions to the tournament will join a gold medalist from the 2007 World Championship Christian Schwarzer, another former German international Frank von Behren, the former World Handball Player of the Year Daniel Stephan, the 2012 EHF EURO champion Lars Christiansen and both coaches of the silver medal winning Swedish team from the 2012 London Olympics, Ola Lindgren and Staffan Olsson.
Last year the event supported by adidas and held during the VELUX EHF FINAL4 weekend attracted considerable interest as well as celebrity and amateur players. All proceeds from the event went to supporting cancer care and a total amount of €38,826.13 were raised last year - the largest amount to be donated to a charity partner since the event began in 2010.
One of the last year's participants, Bogdan Wenta will change the golf green for a handball court at the LANXESS arena as he will lead the VELUX EHF FINAL4 newcomers Vive Targi Kielce at the tournament.
The winner of the tournament gets a personal golf club fitting at the TaylorMade Center of Excellence in Herzogenaurach, Germany, including a brand new TaylorMade iron set and many other prizes.
