10,000 fans celebrate in Hamburg
With golden top hats on their heads and the VELUX EHF Champions League trophy in their hands, HSV Hamburg celebrated the biggest success in the club’s history on Sunday (9 June).
10,000 fans gathered in the main square in front of city hall to celebrate the club’s achievement in becoming only the third German team to win the biggest prize in club handball.
The city’s mayor, Olaf Scholz, suitably clad in a HSV shirt, was full of praise for the local team. “It was a brilliant performance, HSV achieved thanks to their team spirit,” he said.
'Best fans in Europe'
Left back Blazenko Lackovic summed up the atmosphere. “Our fans are sensational. Not only our team but also our fans are the best in Europe:"
“You’re simply the best”, the Croat shouted to the sea of fans in front of city hall.
Hamburg finished the season in fifth place, with a draw at Melsungen, and had already presented to their fans at their final home match on Wednesday.
First triple-top-goal-scorer
Right winger, Hans Lindberg, was singled out for special praise.
The Dane became the first ever player in the German league to achieve the triple - top goal scorer in the German Cup (28 goals), the Bundesliga (235 goals) and the VELUX EHF Champions League (101 goals).
“I really enjoy those three awards, but without my team none of them would have been possible," he said.
"And I specially say thank you to our fans, as they are a major part of our first ever VELUX EHF Champions League title. It is an incredible party on the square.”
