Swedish defensive specialist has signed for EHF Cup participants LUGI Handboll Lund on a four-year deal

Jernemyr returns home to Sweden

The VELUX EHF Champions League Final on 2 June proved to be Magnus Jernemyr’s last competitive game FC Barcelona Intersport as he completed his move to Swedish side Lugi Lund. Jernemyr has signed a four-year deal with the club, who will play in the EHF Cup this coming season.

Ever since it became a fact that Jernemyr was going to leave Barcelona after the past season, rumors and speculations have been flying around about where his future lay.

Lately more and more rumours were linking him with his native country, and it became official that his new club is LUGI Handboll Lund.

“It feels right and very good. I am not only going to play matches, but I am also going to improve the level of the other players and create stability and security in the defence.

“I play handball with my heart and right now I really feel like playing,” Magnus Jernemyr said at the press conference in Lund, where he was introduced as new LUGI player.

The experienced line player and defensive specialist is joining on a four year contract, but he is not quite sure that he is going to play all four years.

“If, after two years, I do not find it fun any longer, I am not going to play the rest of my contract just for the money. In that case, we will have to find a different role for me,” admitted the 37-year-old.

Delighted coach

Quite understandably, LUGI´s head coach Tomas Axnér was a happy man at the presentation of his new signing.

“Last year Lugi were the team who let in the lowest number of goals in the Elitserien (the Swedish league). Now we add further flavor to our defence through one of the world´s best defenders.

“It is my hope that Magnus will share his enormous skills with his teammates and that his winning mentality and his will to sacrifice himself will spread to the rest of our players.

“We are now a team who should be a contender for the Swedish championship, and should also be able to compete in Europe,” Tomas Axnér said.

Magnus Jernemyr has played 102 internationals for Sweden so far and will continur his international experience with LUGI Lund, who are entering the EHF Cup in Qualification Round 2 in October, where they are facing the winner of the Round 1 tie between Hungarian Grundfos Tatabanya KC and Achilles Bocholt from Belgium.
